Digital image. BBC news 10 April 2019
On 10 April of this year, humankind viewed for the first time an image of a black hole. The popular press described the event as “revolutionary.” But the thrill felt by many astronomers lay in just how well our guesswork and expectations were in fact confirmed. It looked just like a black hole ought to look.
If not a true revolution, the image was certainly a culmination, led by great scientists from Einstein to Schwarzschild to Penrose & Hawking. Their beautiful mathematical work laid the foundations for our understanding of black holes, first engendering, then ultimately overcoming, decades of controversy.
In this presentation, Professor Steven Balbus, a Shaw Prize winner, will talk about black holes: what they are, why they were for so long controversial, how the evidence for their existence steadily grew, what the latest spectacular result from the Event Horizon Telescope actually reveals, and what mysteries remain.

Introduction to OSCAR
The Oxford Suzhou Centre for Advanced Research (OSCAR) is the University of Oxford's first overseas centre for physical science and engineering research, primarily expanding on activities from across the University's Mathematical, Physical and Life Sciences Division.
OSCAR was established initially with a grant from Suzhou Industrial Park, where many strategic benefits are offered to Oxford's research mission through access to state-of-the-art facilities, a research environment enriched by numerous universities and Chinese Academy Institutes, and a substantial company base.
OSCAR offers an exciting new frontier for the University of Oxford to develop and showcase its research excellence in physical and engineering sciences, with a dedicated Centre in a unique, globally-focused environment.
Situating laboratories in the impressive Suzhou Industrial Park will enable Oxford academics to strengthen existing partnerships and form new links, benefitting their research programmes and advancing technologies closer to market. Through these partnerships, OSCAR can develop solutions that will help to address important challenges faced not only by the UK and China, but across the globe.
Initial research programmes will be led by groups from the University departments of Engineering Science, Physics, Chemistry and Materials. Initial research activities are clustered across the following themes:
Biomedical Engineering and Healthcare
Environment and Biotechnology
Nanotechnology and Functional Materials
