Between 21-23 March, the University of Oxford hosted its largest ever gathering of Oxford graduates in Asia. Meeting Minds: Alumni Weekend in Asia attracted more than 500 alumni and friends from Hong Kong, China, Singapore, Japan, Mongolia, the Philippines, the US, the UK, Australia, Thailand, Malaysia and India. The three days of festivities was hosted by the University Chancellor, the Rt Hon Lord Patten of Barnes (Chris Patten), and the University Vice-Chancellor, Professor Andrew Hamilton, and brought together graduates, friends and world-leading academic figures for academic talks, social events and the opening of the exhibition ‘‘Mapping Ming China’s Maritime World – The Selden Map and Other Treasures from University of Oxford’ at the Hong Kong Maritime Museum.
The Weekend started with an informal Friday lunch attended by leaders of the alumni groups from across Asia together with the Chancellor, followed by the Weekend's welcome reception at the Hong Kong Maritime Museum. On Saturday, alumni and friends gathered in the JW Marriott for a day of academic sessions that was a roller coaster of intellectual stimulation and fun - taking in mindful eating, novel healthcare solutions, a game of mathematical chairs, and a riotous debate on Asia’s role in the 21st century.
The highlight of the Weekend, a Oxford formal hall dinner was held at the Four Seasons Hotel (dubbed 'Four Seasons College' by the Chancellor), with the support of Hackett London, University Gala Dinner Sponsor, who helped to make it a truly magical evening. Alumnus Michael Wong (Kellogg 2009) and his company Oxonia Company Ltd sponsored the pre-dinner champagne reception and alumni Dr Siripattra Kusuwan (Wadham 1998), Robbie McRobbie (Teddy Hall), Oxford Limited as well as Hackett London were the sponsors of the raffle prizes. The highlight of the evening included a set by the Oxford Gargoyles, the jazz a cappella choir comprised of students from the University who delighted with their verbal acrobatics and musical talent. Thanks also go to alumni Frank Choi (University 2006), Timothy Chu (St Catz, 2006) and Ryan Wong (St Catz 2006) who performed as a piano trio during the pre-dinner reception.
On Sunday, alumni were up bright and early for a family choral workshop with the inexhaustible students from the Oxford Gargoyles before joining the family dim sum lunch at the China Club, sponsored by Sir David Tang. The weekend finished with a rousing rendition of 'Lean on Me' by the alumni, academics, friends and students alike.
