Rhodes Scholar-Elect for Hong Kong 2016, Serena Yichen Dai
The Rhodes-Scholar Elect for Hong Kong 2016, Serena Yichen Dai is a senior student of the Chinese University of Hong Kong, studying for a Bachelor of Science in Molecular Biotechnology. A student with an avid curiosity in evolutionary biology specializing in human genetics and with a personal dedication to helping and understanding cross-cultural interactions, she impressed the selection committee with her energy and personal commitment to advancing genomic research and helping disadvantaged members of society, as well as her exceptional academic results. Serena Dai plans to pursue the Doctor of Philosophy in Zoology at Oxford.

Rhodes Scholar-Elect for Hong Kong 2015, Geoffrey Yeung
Geoffrey Yeung Ka Wei is a graduate of the University of Hong Kong and Diocesan Boy’s School. Geoffrey received a Bachelor of Business Administration and the Bachelor of Laws with first class honours and is currently studying for a Postgraduate Certificate in Laws. A student with a personal dedication to civil rights and equality, he impressed the selection committee with his energy and personal commitment to working with disadvantaged members of society, as well as his exceptional academic results. Geoffrey Yeung plans to pursue the Bachelor of Civil Law at the University of Oxford starting in October 2015.

Rhodes Scholar for Hong Kong 2013, Cherry Xu
Cherry was born in 1989 in Fujian, China. The top scorer in the National College Entrance Examination from her hometown, she undertook the compulsory foundation course at Fudan University for admission to the University of Hong Kong in 2008. From there she received a Bachelor of Laws with first class honours in 2011 as the highest ranked student in her graduating class. In 2010-11 she studied at the Faculty of Law at the University of Nottingham as an exchange student. She is currently studying for a Postgraduate Certificate in Law at the University of Hong Kong. At the University of Oxford she will pursue a Bachelor in Civil Law.
While an undergraduate Cherry received numerous awards including the Madam Lau Kit Fong Memorial Scholarship, the Bank of East Asia Golden Jubilee Scholarship, the Des Voeux Chambers Junior Scholarship, the M.W Lo Memorial Scholarship, the Rowdget W Young Medal in Law and the Linklaters Prize for Overall Excellence in Law. |
She is senior editor of the Hong Kong Journal of Legal Studies and is a published author in the Hong Kong Law Journal. As the elected Legal Education Secretary of the HKU Law Association in 2008-9, Ms Xu organised the first joint university legal education programme between the three law schools in Hong Kong. As chairman of the joint committee, Cherry oversaw the implementation of a programme of activities to provide school education and to heighten public awareness towards the Basic Law and the legal system of Hong Kong. In 2012 she represented the University of Hong Kong in the Philip C Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition.
Cherry has had regular discipline-related employment in law firms and with barristers in Hong Kong as well as a full and varied schedule of voluntary service. Following participation in a voluntary programme at the Thai / Myanmar border, she now leads a media project to help raise awareness for legal and political activism in the area, including a documentary on Burmese migrants’ life and hope for freedom. Her passion for law is borne of a keen sense of justice and respect for civil society, and she hopes to develop this in the future as a barrister in Hong Kong and to one day bring the spirit of the rule of law back to mainland China.
