Students and researchers in Oxford are gaining novel insights into China with the help of a new speaker series. Over the past eight months, the Deutsche Bank Oxford China Centre Lecture Series has featured leading voices on China’s filmmaking, internet regulation and relationship between business and society, with a call for businesses to engage radically with society in both China and the West.
Professor Rana Mitter, Deutsche Bank Director of the Oxford China Centre, said at the launch of the series in November 2015 ‘I am enormously excited to host this prestigious series of lectures, which will be a highlight for scholars, not just in Europe, but in the wider world.’ Professor Mitter is a world-leading academic on the history and politics of China.
Lord Browne of Madingley, former CEO of BP plc, delivered the inaugural lecture of the Deutsche Bank Oxford China Centre Lecture Series in November 2015. He provided an inspiring and penetrating talk on how society and business need to reconnect in the West, China, and beyond.
One of the recent speakers was Kaiser Kuo, former Director of International Communications at Baidu.com. He spoke on ‘Dancing with the Digital Devil? Beijing’s Ambivalent Embrace of the Internet’. In addition, Lu Chuan, internationally renowned director of City of Life and Death and The Last Supper, recently shared his view from the director’s chair to talk about filmmaking and its future in China.
Guests attended the lectures at the China Centre lecture theatre inside the Dickson Poon University of Oxford China Centre Building on the premises of St Hugh’s College, created to draw together interdisciplinary research and teaching covering many aspects of Chinese culture.
The Oxford China Centre is grateful for the generous support from Deutsche Bank for the lecture series, making it possible for students and staff at the University of Oxford to hear from some of these great minds. Deutsche Bank’s gift also supports the Director of the Oxford China Centre, Professor Rana Mitter.
The Deutsche Bank Oxford China Centre Lecture Series has become a keynote event for the world’s leading experts on China. Stay tuned for the upcoming lectures!
