The Oxford China Trekkers' Challenge
In June 2015, a group of Oxford's graduates and staff will be trekking to raise funds to support the university's mission of teaching and learning about China.
The University of Oxford China Centre is a new world-class hub for the study of China, with over 45 academics in Oxford focusing on China-related research and teaching in a wide variety of disciplines. At the heart of this enterprise is the Bodleian KB Chen China Centre Library, which provides a world-class library service for students and scholars of China. With a collection of over 45,000 volumes and a range of electronic resources, it is also a contemplative study space, playing a pivotal role in the life of the centre. Through their journey across the remote Yading Nature Reserve in China’s Sichuan Province, the trekkers aim to raise funds to support the library's acquisitions.
“"The richness of Oxford’s Chinese collection makes the Oxford China Centre an incredibly exciting place to study and conduct research. From cutting-edge social science to the study of the most ancient carvings, the library is central to our intellectual enterprise. Support for the collection will further enrich the Oxford China Centre and support our aspiration to be the western world’s premier institution for the study of China."
Rana Mitter, Professor of the History and Politics of Modern China and Director of the Oxford China Centre |
"The number of books published in China today is almost the same as of all the European countries put together. With a 400 year history of collecting Chinese books, the Bodleian today is the lifeline for a wide range of students and researchers from all over the world. Collecting the right material for current and future generations is crucial for the support of all aspects of Chinese Studies."

A current and comprehensive library collection is the lifeblood of good scholarship. Specialist publications like those in the Bodleian KB Chen China Centre Library are printed in limited quantities, so the Library must purchase important new works when they become available.
